Chamber 1-5: Tainted Gallery

Finding checks that the noose knot she's constructed is sturdy and weighty enough and, focusing her efforts on the rope lowers it rapidly into the acid, hoping that her hands are steady enough to successfully loop it around the torch and bring it up to the surface before the rope crumbles.

As she works on the torch, she notices two more oddities on the bottom of the pool. "Everyone, there's not just the torch down here, there are two smaller items sitting next to it - but they're too small for me to loop with a rope noose! One looks like a key, and one looks like a...I think it's a scroll case, made out of bone. How can we get those up?"

Finding snags the everburning torch quickly and pulls it up out of the pool of acid. The rope is even holding up pretty well despite being soaked in acid. The torch is a simple steel rod, on the bottom of which is a strange series of notches that suggest it was once part of another object.

On cue, two of the statues spray the acid mist!
Tech: #2 and #6 attack this time... acid spray vs fortitude:
Galad: 11, miss
Ambrose: 21, hit, 6 points damage
Spirit Companion: natural 1, miss
Vondal: 8, miss
Finding: 12, miss

You've defeated the skeletons, their bones now litter the floor just like they litter the bottom of the pool. Yet, the danger is not over; the statues continue to spray acid at you! Combat rounds are still going because of this.

Initiative:
15 Joryn
14 Ambrose
10 Vondal
08 Galad

22 Finding
21 Tharl
16 Lohmi
16 Acid-Spraying Statues (6)

  1. Joryn cringes to see if the statue in front of him sprays him. When it remains empty he looks it over from top to bottom to see if he can jam it up and keep it from spraying further.

    Tech: Perception check, action?
If I notice anything out of sorts, I may do something, but if not I'm going to double move to T7

  2. OOC: Note, due date for this round is Wednesday, Noon CST.

  3. Joryn notices that the statue (#5) has an empty left eye socket. Looking more closely at the dirty plaque set in the statue's base, he wipes the grime away to reveal a crooked start circumscribed by a circle (on the plaque). The star has 13 points.

  4. Tech:
Cool, Joryn double moves to T7

  5. Tharl charges across the chamber while he has the opportunity. He also releases his spirit companion.

Tech: Double move to R6, minor action to release spirit companion.

  6. Lohmi gives a faint smile as the skeleton drops. "Anyone have any ideas on how to stop these statues?" Lohmi himself glances at the statue behind him, confused as to why it hadn't sprayed them yet. Lohmi moves to inspect it more closely.

"Maybe someone can swim down to get the items? I'll go down if no one else will."

Lohmi takes a deep breath and draws on his inner reserves of strength. If he was to swim, he needed his strength.

OOC: Move to M9-M10 to inspect the statue. Using Second Wind (-1 healing surge, +10 hp, +2 to defenses until start of next turn).

  7. [Joryn & Tharl]
Tharl and Joryn move closer to the large statue. The statue is carved to look like a gangly noble whose head is thrown back in agony, mouth open wide in a silent wail. Tears of acid pour from his empty eye sockets, flowing down his stone robes and emptying into the channel in the floor that leads to the acid pool. The statue is nearly 15 feet tall.

    Meanwhile, Tharl's spirit companion vanishes.

    [Lohmi]
Lohmi notices that the statue (#3) has an empty left eye socket. Looking more closely at the dirty plaque set in the statue's base, he wipes the grime away to reveal a crooked start circumscribed by a circle (on the plaque). The star has 5 points.

Tech: Second Wind used. Hit points up to 23, surges down to 9. +2 to all defenses until start of next turn.

  8. Lohmi rises after examining the plaque, mentally trying to place if he has seen anything like what was on it.

"A circle with a five pointed star. Anyone know anything about this?" he asks those who had moved near him.

  9. Ambrose (NPC'd by DM) moves to examine the northwest-most statue (#6). He says, "The plaque at the feet of this one has a crooked star with 6 points; the left eye socket is empty."

  10. Vondal puts extra padding where it's needed, then dives into the acid pool (square J7). His intent is to retrieve the key and scroll, which he spots immediately ... And is working on reaching them, receiving minor burns in the process. (I worked in cooperation with DM Joe.)

  11. Vondal's efforts are not paying off, as he flounders in the acid. He sinks under the liquid.
Tech: Natural 1 on swimming check. Sink 5 feet and take 9 points mild-acid damage.

  12. Leaving her noosed rope by the pool, in case it's needed quickly to haul Vondal back up, Finding walks over to the southern statue (#2) for an inspection. "Do you think the base of the torch was designed to fit in any of the holes we're finding?" she asks the others. "Also, if we're going to hang around here, we need to stop these acid bursts." Balancing herself with her tail, she reaches up to get a closer look at the statue's head.

    Tech:
    Move to I10

Minor action: Perception (+10) on eye socket.

Minor action: Thievery (+8) [or Dungeoneering (+8) whichever you feel more suitable] on acid spout mechanism.

  13. As far as Finding can tell, the everburning torch does not seem to be a fit for the eye sockets.

However! She can easily disable this statue's (#2) acid nozzle if she so wishes. (Rolled 25 on Thievery check to disarm.)

Finally, she notes that this statue is like the rest, having a empty left eye socket and a 8 pointed crooked star at it's base.

  14. Vondal shall keep up his attempt for a few minutes longer, then abandon if not successful.

  15. Squinting up at the acid pipe, Finding makes a triumphant growl as she realises that she can switch it off. She reaches in and disables the statue. "This one's turned off everyone, if you're worried about getting hit by the spray, cross over here if you can."

[OOC: since I'm up and going I'll do my next move in advance, process as you see fit of course]

Quickly she jumps down and crosses the room to the south eastern statue (#3). Reaching up she sees about switching off this mechanism as well.

    [Tech:
    Move - cross to M10
    Standard - disable statue #3, thievery +8]

  16. Galad prepares to jump in the acid after Vondal if the splashing and floundering happen much longer. In the mean time, he moves closer to the nearest statue (#1) and examines the markings on it.

[Tech: Move to E10, perception +11]

    ReplyDelete
  17. Galad notices something different about this statue (#1)! He discovers that the left eye socket is filled with a smooth round stone, and easily plucked out if so desired. As far as Galad can tell, the stone is not trapped.

Wiping the grime from the plaque, he spies a crooked star (circumscribed by a circle, like the rest) with 4 points.

Just then, the statue starts to split and crack... and Galad senses that in mere moments, the statue will crumble apart from the pressure of the acid it contains!

OOC: Galad, need to know if you will take the stone or leave it behind.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Galad quickly grabs the stone and hightails it away from the statue, completely forgetting about Vondal. "Hey Finding, look what I found." (said as the statue crumbles)

[Tech: action point, move to H10]
