Joryn explodes into action
into the chamber of heat and death
leaping over the vent that holds its blast
smoke and ash that would choke your breath
Tharl takes his place
near beautiful treasure chest
Finding focused on thought
nary their skills be best
Curious and curious
the runic circle, Lohmi draws near
a summoning trap, to bring the foe
a wicked creature of blight and fear
the ogre appears, infused with GRUBS
your realization, far too late
its Gisarme cuts Lohmi deep
a potent guardian of malicious hate
the force of the swing driving him in
the bones crush beneath, an unholy pyre
purifying him of flesh and sin
Tech: Ok, bad poetry aside, here's what happened. When Lohmi approached the circle, it summoned the Ogre, but this one is covered with sickening grubs that burrow into and out of its skin! It attacked Lohmi twice with a long gisarme (reach 2); one miss and one hit. With the hit, it was able to push Lohmi into the nearby fiery bone-filled pit (failed save). Total damage = 15 from hit, and 4 from fire in the pit. Lohmi is almost bloodied, but not quite at 21 hp.
You were all able to figure out the circle's purpose (summoning), but right at the moment the Ogre appeared. Tharl and Finding had poor rolls (nary their skills be best).
If I misunderstood your positioning in the map, just let me know and we'll correct.
Only Tharl loses a Healing Surge from heat so far.

10 THE OGRE

Vondal goes into the hellish chamber and immediately spots a grub-covered ogre ... He pulls out his bow and fires ... Meaning for an evasive attack move.
ReplyDeleteVondal's arrow is too high, hitting the ceiling instead of the Ogre.
ReplyDeleteTech: Roll of 14 vs AC. Miss.
OOC: Chatting with Vondal's player...
IC: Vondal strikes out a second time, this time hitting the Ogre in the left shoulder.
Tech: Action Point. Hit vs AC18; 13 points damage to the Ogre!
Filled with holy might and ignoring the heat, Joryn roars at the sight of the hideous creature. He leaps over the vents and passes the chest. His sword glows bright white as he specifically burns with holy rage against the creature and jabs his sword into the ogre's side.
ReplyDeleteTech:
Move Action: move to E8.
Minor Action: Activate Defender Aura.
Standard Action + Free Action: Valiant Strike and Holy Smite. Target takes 5 radiant damage (just for being targetted) and on a hit is dazed until the end of my next turn. +10 (one enemy adjacent) vs. AC; 1d8+4 damage.
Thankful that he called his spirit companion, Tharl summons the wrath of the winter spirits through it, calling up an ethereal cloud of cold winds and spiritual claws and teeth of ice to attack the ogre.
ReplyDeleteTech: attack +6 vs. fortitude, 1d10+5 cold damage.
Standing fast, and concentrating past the oppressive heat, Finding hurls an unbalancing force towards the ogre, the sound of gears barely audible above the roar of the room. "If I hit him, he'll be unbalanced," she shouts to her comrades. "See if we can force him into a fire pit!"
ReplyDeleteTech:
No move.
Minor Action: Endurance +2 against heat
Standard Action: attack +4 vs Fortitude, 1d8+3 force damage. Next ally who hits pushes the target 1 square
[Joryn]
ReplyDeleteJoryn acts with white hot holy rage, and in the blink of an eye he's right up to the ogre, jamming the sword into the hideous Ogre's side! The Ogre is completely dazed by the attack, reeling from the pain. It howls in agony! However, from the wound Joryn inflicted, a mass of writhing rot grubs emerges, wriggling and slithering down the blade and onto the cavalier's arm. Joryn withdraws his sword and wipes the grubs away before then can burrow into his flesh.
Tech: You maxed out damage against the Ogre with a natural 20! The Ogre took 17 damage and is still going strong, although is Dazed (see below). You almost had some Ongoing damage due to the grubs, but you made a good Save against it. Joryn loses 1 healing surge due to heat; 13 remaining.
[Tharl]
Taking advantage of Joryn's maneuver, Tharl delivers a blast of hoary cold, buring the Ogre's flesh with it's bitter sting.
Tech: Natural 19, dice are on fire today! 14 damage to the Ogre; on the light side of moderately wounded. Tharl loses 1 healing surge due to heat, 8 remaining.
[Finding]
Finding's blast seems to have no impact on the Ogre, a creature of mighty endurance and fortitude!
Tech: Even with combat advantage, you were only up to 18, not enough. However, endurance check vs heat success, no surge loss.
*****
Dazed:
You can take either a standard, a move, or a minor action on your turn (you can also take free actions). You can't take immediate actions or opportunity actions. You grant combat advantage. You can't
flank an enemy. You can't delay.
*****
Those of you adjacent to the summoning circle can hear screams and cries that rise and fade, as if buffeted by a strong wind...
ReplyDeleteLohmi, seeing that the ogre was incapacitated for the moment. Immediately sets to climb out of the pit. Once, free, he immediately strikes out at the ogre, trying to cause as much damage as possible.
ReplyDeleteOOC:
Climbing Athletics +6 (to F5)
Assuming the climbing works:
Attack with Sword burst
+7 vs reflex for 1d6+4 force damage (may not have the right, my character sheet is out of date with the new weapon)
Lohmi's fiend-cursed dagger drinks deep of the blood of the Ogre! Like Joryn, being close to the Ogre means risking getting rot grubs on you, but Lohmi is careful for the moment.
ReplyDeleteTech: An AC 18 hit, for 6 points of damage on the Ogre. Lohmi loses 1 healing surge; 9 remaining.
OOC: Looks like only Ambrose is yet to go. Will give him tonight to post, and then I'll post tomorrow either way.
ReplyDeleteInstead of a whole new post, we can continue on this one...
ReplyDelete[Ambrose]
Ambrose enters the chamber and fires a magic missile at the Ogre.
Tech: Ogre takes 7 damage. Ambrose at H2 on map.
[Ogre]
The Ogre turns to face Joryn, slicing with its gisarme. Joryn's new armor protects him very well!
Tech: FOUR misses against Joryn. Even used an action point. Dice were cold today!
Suddenly, the southern-most vents (2) both blast a column of hot steam upward. Be glad you weren't standing on them!

10 THE OGRE
After deflecting multiple attacks from the Ogre, Joryn sneers, quite proud of himself. He eyes the treasure chest to his side and decides the ogre is his best focus.
ReplyDelete"Someone want to fiddle with this chest? We've got to bring this creature down, but I'm no good with locks."
He ducks low under the ogre's arm, bringing his shield high to block out the flow of grubs and tries to bring his blade into the side of the foul creature.
Tech:
Standard Action:
Valiant Strike +10 vs AC, 1d8+4 damage.
Minor Action:
Perception check +3 on the treasure check to see whether it looks locked or not.
OOC: I'll wait for the outcome of Joryn's and Lohmi's moves to see what Finding does.
ReplyDeleteLohmi glances down at the circle, was there a way to disrupt it?
ReplyDeleteOOC: Minor action: Arcana check: +10 - can we destroy the circle? And will that get rid of the ogre?
Other actions to follow!
Answers: Yes, you could destroy the magic of the summoning circle. In this case though, no, it would not get rid of the Ogre.
ReplyDeleteLohmi grumbles, and swings his dagger, sending another wave of force at the ogre.
ReplyDeleteOOC: Attack with Sword burst.
+7 vs reflex for 1d6+4 force damage
OOC: Spent today working on Gencon stuff. Plan to post tomorrow. Also, I am on vacation Thursday/Friday (standing up in a wedding).
ReplyDeleteOOC: Can we destroy the circle while the ogre is still standing in/on it?
ReplyDeleteAmbrose takes advantage of the distracted ogre to quickly move South, then West, over to the door at B10. Huffing and puffing against the heat, he starts to analyze the chest and door for arcane secrets and reveals.
ReplyDeleteTech:
Double move action (7 speed)
Minor action for endurance against the heat.
[Joryn]
ReplyDeleteYour blade continues to make mince meat of the Ogre! You chance a glance to the chest, and can see that it is sealed with an intricate mechanical
lock.
Tech: 28 vs. AC, hit for 7 damage.
[Lohmi]
Lohmi takes advantage of Joryn's distraction send another blast of force energy into the Ogre.
Tech: 9 force damage. Ogre is bloodied!
[Ambrose]
Ambrose races to the southwest corner, and examines the western double doors! It is a heavy brass door is embossed with the image of a three-headed balor wrestling a goristro. There are no handles, but there is a fist-sized indentation in the center of the door. Ambrose does not sense any magic at work.
Tech: Sorry, for you the "resist heat" is a standard action. Only for Tieflings (resistant to fire) is it a minor action. Therefore, you are down 1 healing surge; 6 remaining.
OOC: In the new few weeks, my posting will be slower than normal. Gencon is the reason. But I really do enjoy putting these posts together, so I don't want to take a full break, you know?
Quickly, taking advantage of the Ogre being weakened and covered by Joryn, Lohmi and Tharl, Finding runs across to the chest and starts examining the lock for traps, and whether it's openable.
ReplyDeleteTech:
Move - run (8 squares) to E9
Minor - thievery (+8)
Minor - endurance (+2)
Ambrose notes the direction of the indentation, inward or outward?
ReplyDeleteSeeing that others are busy seeking routes out of the room, Tharl redirects the winter spirits for another attack on the ogre.
ReplyDeleteTech: attack +6 vs. Fortitude, 1d10+5 cold damage.
[Finding]
ReplyDeleteFinding examines the treasure chest, seeing an intricate trio of iron dials on it, with markings that look like they could be Abyssal. It would take a little bit of time, but it's possible for Finding to potentially open it just by mechanical/thievery means.
OOC: You rolled high enough on investigation that I'll reveal the details. Four successes needed, DC 21. You may attempt your skill check as a minor action. Also, you succeed against the heat, no surge loss.
[Ambrose]
The indentation is inward, into the door.
[Tharl]
Tharl's blizzard assaults the Ogre once again, but notices it doesn't has as much effect as it had previously.
Tech: Ogre has gained resist 5 cold! Tharl's attack only does 4 damage. Tharl loses 1 healing surge to heat; 7 remaining.
OOC: I think Vondal is left to go, and I'll try to get another post out today if possible. Then vacation for the rest of the week!
OOC: Retcon, I missed a Vulnerable 5 Cold on the Ogre! Therefore, the Ogre takes 10 more damage from Tharl's two cold attacks. The Ogre is now normal for Cold, his Vulnerable and Resistance cancelling each other out.
ReplyDeleteOOC: Back from vacation, but in full annual Gencon freak-out mode. Putting all Grind4E posts on hold until after Gencon. I go through this each year, feeling like I overextended myself, my games are going to suck, etc. But usually I manage to pull through before the big day comes. See you guys after the con. Thanks for your patience!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy, send pics and vids!
