Fane of the Heresiarch: Chaos Maze

Underneath the Blighted Grove, this sprawling labyrinth beneath the Fane is stalked by a fiendish half-manticore minotaur. If you discover the inmost den at the maze's center, you may claim the treasures within!

Secrecy and honesty is the rule here. ALL out-of-character communications, including emails, that discuss locations of cards and strategies of this challenge are prohibited. When a dungeoneer takes his or her turn, he or she may choose to do any one of the following:
  • Take a Short Rest.
  • Use their keen architectural sense (alignment of walls, subtle air flow) to discern which corridors lead to dead ends (1/game).
  • Use their acute sense of direction and aptitude for pattern recognition to help keep the party from getting lost  (1/game) .
  • Find a vantage point from which they can survey one of the labyrinth’s sections  (1/game) .
  • Cast the Hand of Fate ritual (1/game).
  • Choose two cards from the Labyrinth Deck, shown at the right, to reveal.
I will then reveal the two cards. They will remain visible until the next person chooses.
  • Matching two architectural features progresses the party one or two steps in unraveling the maze.
  • Matching two treasure chests reveals a hidden boon.
  • Drawing one Minotaur Card indicates the party narrowly escaped the hunting beast. Matching two Minotaur Cards indicates that the Minotaur has cornered its prey and attacks!
  • Choosing two cards that do not match incurs 1 Blight and 5 damage which cannot be negated or reduced in any way.
After each dungeoneer has taken a turn, one row of cards is reshuffled and replaced. Play then continues into the next round.

The order of play for this challenge shall be first-come first-serve. Dungeoneers shall take their turn whenever they are ready, and then wait until after the cards are reshuffled at the end of round before taking another turn.

  1. Of course, no writing down card locations or saving images. Pretend like you're playing a game of memory.

    1. To keep things going, consider each new day as a new turn. In other words, Gardain and Sciora may pick new actions each day regardless of whom else posts.

    2. Sciora gains 1 point of blight (1 total accumulated) and takes 5 points of damage (40 remaining).

    1. OOC: Those are minotaur cards. Don't pick them. :) You should draw two cards before the end of the night!

I almost want the minotaur thing at this point, get it out of the way. :P

    Nobody has Hand of Fate?

  10. [Gardain]

Grumbling to himself in the flickering light of the wall sconces, the dwarf crouches close to the wall, dragging a finger along the mortar. He then feels the grain of the stone and presses close to the wall, closing one eye as he peers along the curve of the stone passageway. Suddenly he dusts himself off and stands, clearing his throat. "Tis this way." He says gruffly, striding off into the gloom.

OOC: Utilize dwarven dungeoneering and stone knowledge to discern the next step. Dungeoneering +7, Insight +5, Dwarfiness +20

  11. Shazi's card reveal (turn 5) is shown above. Not a match. Shazi now has 1 point of blight, and loses her temp hp.

Gardain's efforts in stonecunning and dungeoneering are embarrassing! He doesn't have a clue! (Natural 1.)

  15. OOC: I'm altering the rules above a bit. If this were at the table, I would not stop the group from strategizing and talking. One might say, "Hey, I saw a Bridge here, and I think there's one there too!"

At the table, that would be an okay thing to do.

Therefore, I will allow out of character talk on this.

    1. OOC: I will also allow you to waive the memory game and bring on the minotaur combat if you wish. I would require a majority vote to make it happen. Combat would then begin immediately with no chances for short rests.

  16. [Gardain]

“Nae, I MEANT tae brin’ us back tae th’ entrance, tae git aur bearin’s, y’ken?!” The dwarf rails at Sciora as she scathingly berates him about his sorry form of underground navigation. In a huff the paladin gives the stone wall beside him, his steel boot sending shards of stone skittering across the floor. ”Tha’s IT!” He hefts his axe and brandishes his shield, slamming the heavy blade against the cold-iron surface.

“Beast o’ Chaos, Ah call to ye! If y’hard enou’h, we have nae mare patience nor time tae play yer games! Face us an’ les be done wi’ it!” His booming voice echoes through the enclosed passages as the clanging of his shield and axe reverberates in the ancient stone.

OOC: Turn over A2 & C3. I call out the Minotaur!!
