Halfway down the hall on your right, you spy a painting of a beautiful woman in dark robes. Small horns protrude from her forehead, suggesting demonic heritage.
The impish laughter is once again heard, but this time the source is from the east, from where you had come.
An illusionary trick, perhaps?

Grelloc
ReplyDeleteThe hunter pauses a moment, feeling the door push back against him as it creaks open, trying to close. With a quick glance, he notes that no immediate threats are apparent, and he crouches with a grunt, slinging off his pack. He pulls his climbing gear from its place and sets a piton at an angle against the foot of the door, driving it home against the flagstones with his hammer to try to hold the door open.
Tech:Strength +2, try to brace the closing door with one or more pitons. If there is a handle to the door, tie a length of rope to the it and through the piton.
Del-Kai glances at the doors that seem to be closing and frowns. Pausing a moment, to see if Grelloc's piton can hold the door open, he prepares a spell to keep the door held open.
ReplyDelete[tech]
If Grelloc's check doesn't look like it will be enough to hold the door open, Del-Kai will use the Hold Portal ritual to hold it. Strength DC to close the door is equal to my arcana check (i'm at a +10 right now)
Vengeance cautiously moves down the hallway as the others secure the door, his eyes scanning the floor for further traps and his magical senses extended as he looks at the painting.
ReplyDelete[Tech]
Looking for traps, magic, and seeing if I can recall who this chick is.
Arcana +8, History +8, Perception +5.
"I don't like that laugh. I like it less at our backs!"
ReplyDeleteSeeing little within his domain of knowledge at the moment, Two-Rock busies himself with investigating the fires.

Are the fires natural? trapped?
[Grelloc and Del-Kai]
ReplyDeleteGrelloc spikes the door open with a piton, but even the door still struggles against it. Del-Kai's magic is stronger, and the instant the Hold Portal ritual is cast, the door no longer resists.
Rolls: strength 11, arcana 21.
[Vengeance]
With the door neutralized, Vengeance searches her way into the hallway. She does not spot any traps, and eventually arrives at the painting. While she recognizes the woman to be a succubus, she does not recognize this exact person. However... Vengeance does find a thin, four-inch long slot where the succubus' heart would be; it gives off a strong magical disenchantment aura.
Rolls: arcana 15, history 11, perception 24.
[Two-Rocks]
The fires of the niches are NOT natural. They seem to have no discernable fuel source, and they flicker in odd ways that normal fires shouldn't. It's as if you were watching a fire flickering backwards, in reverse! You're not sure if it's a trap or not...
Rolls: perception 23, nature natural 1.

The door dealt with, the ranger turns towards the flames that flicker in the wall niches. He pulls an unlit torch from his pack and gingerly eases its head into the flame.
Tech:Try to light the torch from the flame, prepare to leap aside should it react negatively. Dex +3
[DM Reaction]
Grelloc finds that the flame ignites his torch. The flame on his torch now matches that of these strange fires - the flames lick the air in strange ways, burning backwards, etc.

The hunter stares at the unnatural flame uneasily, then looks first at the painted succubus then the laughing door. He turns to his companions with a querulous smirk.
"Shall we let them taste their fire?"
Del-Kai frowns. "Did we not hear some rumor about plunging a blade into the heart of the succubus? And did we not find a blade in the room above?"
DeleteTwo-Rocks inspects the dagger and the succubus statue for clues that the two may be related.

Are they made of similar materials?
Do they share common makings?
Crx
ReplyDeleteCrx believes the rumor to be true (as are most rumors, after all) and plunges the Obsidian dagger into the heart of the succubus.
Two-Rocks takes a long, swift stride to spot between the recessed flames and holds his breath for a moment, as if anticipating a trap.
Delete[Two-Rocks and Crx]
ReplyDeleteThe dagger you found in the first chamber does indeed seem to be the right size and shape for the slot. Crx plunges, and is rewarded when the wall gives way - a secret door!
OOC: Post coming up regarding what's found beyond the door, soon!
Grelloc
ReplyDeleteAs the rouge plunges the warped obsidian blade into the breast of the carved, painted succubus, the hunter moves closer to the laughing door. The unearthly giggling sets his hair on end, but he pushes closer, inspecting the laughing faces and the heavy door onto which they are set. Gingerly, he reaches as far as his arm can stretch and touches the flame to the door, watching for any change in the faces.
Tech:Inspect the door for traps, locks or other overtly malicious markings, Perception +7, Dungeoneering +7. Touch the reverse-flame torch to the door and watch the faces carefully, do they react to the arcane fire?
[Grelloc]
ReplyDeleteWhich door (west, or the one you came through)? Assuming west.
The western door seems untrapped and unlocked. The flames do nothing out of the ordinary to the door.
Leaving this open for a bit, but feel free to also post in Hidden Halls III, the place beyond the newly found secret door.
ReplyDeleteGrelloc
ReplyDeleteAs his companions open into the hidden hallway beyond, the hunter crouches, setting the torch aside to rest on the flagstones at his feet as he ever so slowly pulls open the laughing door to the west, peering out through the crack into the room beyond. His keen eyes narrow, searching for movement or threats before he closes the door and turns to his fellows.
Tech:Stealth +8, open the west door just enough to look into the next room, then Stealth +8 to close it again and relay the information as he moves to the secret hall.
[Grelloc]
ReplyDeleteOpening the western door, you see what looks to be an enormous chamber beyond. You get the impression that this door opens upon a balcony, and most of the chamber is below.
However, it's very dark, and very little of your light enters the chamber (due to you only opening the door a crack). You think you see some raised platforms below, and some faint glowing somethings - wisps of light that do little to illuminate the darkness.
