Purge of the Sin-Eaters: The Tomb

When you get very close to the door, the magma becomes transparent and very fake... just wisps of the real thing. The torch's fire of what you hold in your hand is much more real.

Looking through the hole in the door, you see a hallway beyond containing six closed wooden doors. Two torches light the scene. A dark red carpet leads up to a sarcophagus against the far wall. The image of a robed acolyte carrying a inverted trident censor is carved upon the sarcophagus.

OOC: The door in front of you seems to have no handles or locks. It seems you would need to climb through the hole in the door (that has the illusionary magma/fire) if you wish to explore this corridor.

The Mother-Unwilling enters the corridor, parting the fiery veil and allowing honed senses to guide the way..she feels the stone with her fingers, the carpet with her bare feet.. the flesh of the demon tempts her predatory hunger, but more pressing matters await...

She breathes deeply, allowing the room to fill her lungs and tantalize her preternatural senses.. the synapses in her brain fire at the sensory details of the room.

Spout lore: Roll+Int (0): When you consult your accumulated knowledge about something, roll+Int. On a 10+ the GM will tell you something interesting and useful about the subject relevant to your situation. On a 7–9 the GM will only tell you something interesting—it’s on you to make it useful. The GM might ask you “How do you know this?” Tell them the truth, now.

Oh yeah, we roll for ourselves now: 5 (!?). Make it rain (blood).

  3. Stepping into the chamber, you suddenly see that something is straining against the sarcophagus from within! Whatever is inside is unable to open it, and you hear faint screams as well.

OOC: I'm going to swap out a character and do a little retconning. Maedros (Ross) will be stepping out, and replaced by Jykarra (Human Wizard). Pretend Jykarra was with us all along, and not Maedros. Does that work for you?

  4. [Vulture]

Peering around Azul, Vulture sees the large sarcophagus towering before us. He reaches out and puts his hand on Azul's shoulder and whispers with a raspy tone, "The sarcophagus is quite eerie. Should we open the tomb, my blade will be ready to strike. I fear that the doors are just another illusion, where the coffin is the true door. I will be in position."

He takes a brief survey of the corridor before him and swiftly darts to the other end. Crouching beside the coffer, he clasps his gleaming, golden blade. Once in position, Vulture waves a signal back to his companion to open the coffin, and waits for whatever may charge from the tomb.

    Trap Expert:
When you spend a moment to survey a dangerous area, roll+DEX.
    ✴ On a 10+, hold 3.
✴ On a 7–9, hold 1. Spend your hold as you walk through the area to ask these questions:
    • Is there a trap here and if so, what activates it?
    • What does the trap do when activated?
    • What else is hidden here?
    Roll- 9+2(DEX)= 11!
    Asking all 3 questions :D

A bit late for this since we're already peeling this thing open, but what the hey:

I like wizards. Wizards are cool. So who's our new companion in dying horribly?

  6. Careful to only step onto the red carpet, Haargarth retreats from the fireplace and follows his companions. Somehow stupidly, when he sees the sarcophagus move, he loudly blurts out.."Hello?" Then immediately shutting up to see if he can hear sort of reply.

    [OOC]
Six doors mark the hallway, yes? We probably only want to open ONE of them.

  7. [Jykarra]

From the back, Jykarra peers at the Sarcophagus. "Well, surely there's no way that this will end badly for us." He picks up his spellbook and marks a couple of pages, but waits to see what Vulture uncovers.

[OOC] Hi! I'm a wizard! Yaaay!

The entry door you came through, with the illusionary fire, is a trap. Something beyond the six doors in this chamber turns the illusion into REAL. Once you explore beyond one of the six doors (if you do), I'll give you more detail.

There is a woman within the sarcophagus, attempting to free herself.

    [Melliandre]
Melliandre detects the faint odor of incense here, reminding her of deity worship.

    [Haargarth]
When Haargarth calls out, the woman responds... you can make out a, "Hey, you out there? Can you get me out of here?"

    3. Hold on, lady, Haargarth is here. What is your name?

Haargarth is going to slowly walk up the red carpet, and inspect the outside of the sacrophagus for a latch, lock, etc.

  9. Sorry, I meant to tag the first part as both Vulture and Azul. Yes, your 6- roll prompted the sarcophagus thing.

Discern Realities -- I had a vision! I'll spend it here to see what I can find out about the coffin and what is entombed within. I bet it smells like delicious sin... (Sorne salivates).

  11. You smell a human woman there, within. As for the coffin, the lid is closed with a simple latch. As far as you can detect, it is not trapped nor locked... the latch is enough to stop someone from the inside though.

OOC: Going silent after this post until Monday, in honor of the late L. Nimoy.

  12. [Melliandre]

Melliandre steps towards the coffin warily.

"Tell me, prisoner, why are you in there? I smell incense in the air; have you offended the gods? Perhaps if your answers please me, I may release you so that you may gaze upon me..."

    [OOC]

Yes, RIP Mr. Nimoy. Man, I remember being a little kid watching Star Trek II one day, sitting in my dad's armchair and just crying like a baby when Spock died. I feel like that all over again.

The voice from within the sealed sarcophagus is hard to hear. It's a woman's voice for sure, and she's yelling to try to get something through the thick stone.

"You're not going to believe me... You never do! YOU PUT ME IN HERE!"

    [Azul]
Meanwhile, Azul smells about the six flanking doors, examining closely. When he gets very close to each door, he can make out a very faint carved outline on each.

    The six doors are:
    1. A pair of crossed swords
    2. A open tome
    3. A pit trap
    4. Two hands clasped in prayer
    5. Three arrows
    6. A tree

The woman's voice comes back, less yelling this time, "Sorry, whatever you need to know, I'm here to help you, always have."

  17. The woman speaks slowly and clearly, because it's hard to communicate through the stone of the sarcophagus.

"I am the seventh sin-eater. You are the other six, or how many there are left. You're here to destroy the evil and sin of Covenant, or at least you think you are. My name is Sapphire Heart. As to how I can help you, if you're interested in continuing the endless cycle you've been in, feel free to keep this damnable coffin door closed."

"There's more than one way to break this cycle. Eradicate sin, give in to it, or strike new balance with it. Personally, I don't think the first two are even possible. Nature always finds a way." Sorne looks accusingly at Melliandre, "Do you know anything about a seventh sin-eater?".

Bard. Singular. You should never have multiple bards in a party unless you *want* a band to form or bitter rivalries to break out.

Also as already noted, my ISP is beyond terrible, but since they're a tiny local outfit that's the only game in this excuse for a town, you'll never have to deal with them.

The brain is a wonderful thing, how it stores memories. How you traverse them, nerve-path corridors to memory-chambers in the dungeon vaults of your mind.

And, Melliandre... you try your best to do so now, to gather a moment of clarity about this seventh sin-eater. Because if you open that coffin, and some hellbeast devours you from within it, you have nobody but yourself to blame.

You feel like you're sooo fucking close, there's some memory to retrieve about this, something important. And then it hits you like a TITAN'S MAUL across your face... figuratively of course. A realization.

    Your memories have been tampered.

The latch is easy to open, and you open the sarcophagus door.

Out steps a woman with dark hair, who instantly falls to a knee. She looks exhausted, and is wearing the exact same clothing (blue robes) as the corpse in the previous feast hall.

"Thank you," she says as she begins to regain composure and strength.

    1. Haargath gives the blue lady a short smile, and asks her name after giving his. "Can you tell us how you came to be trapped in this sarcophagus, and what significance your blue robes bear?" The bard searches her mind for answers, trying to recall stories or poems or songs that might lead her to the truth, only to find a different truth. A look of slowly-dawning horror passes her face and she reaches out to try to stop... Something.

"I..." She stammers, feeling as though the floor has fallen out from under her. Her memory and ability to recall things was her life and her greatest pride. "Stop. We all have to stop for a moment, we have to think we have to try to..." The words flow out of her almost without thought. "Think. Think. Do any of you feel it? Do any of you realize it?" She realizes that she's being stared at, and despite her inner demon loving that, it makes her for once feel self-conscious and afraid.

"My memories. They've been tampered with. There's something, something I should be remembering, but it's not there, it's... Something is wrong." She looks at the woman in fear. "What do you know about this?"
