Chamber 5-2: Run!

Finding detects plenty of magic in this chamber, lots of different auras. Not enough time to discern the details though!

Lohmi looks to Joryn, "This must be some kind of trap...curses. Let's see if we can find a way out. I think it may have to do with these cubes." With that, Lohmi dashes across the traps with plans on examining the second cube in the eastern alcove (first vestibule).

The swordmage never makes it that far. As he traverses over the traps, a barrage of ghostly saw blades the size of shields spins violently upwards from the slots in the floor! The blades flash with violet magic and have the image of a sneering skull etched in the center.

Lohmi is sliced clean in two, his vicera and brain matter spilling outward in a heap of crimson and gray. The smell of your friend's insides hits your nose instantly.
Tech: Natural 20 for the Ethereal Vorpal Skull-Blades means instant death!

Both Finding and Tharl leap into the chamber, over the horrific trap. Finding lands on the far side, and Tharl has to seek the safety of the western alcove. Vondal times his approach, rolling under the descending wall and getting to safety before the skull-blades can activate again. He seeks the safety of the eastern alcove.

Before Ambrose can choose his action, the wall seals him out. Will he be the only one that lives through this?

OOC: It's initiative time! I'm still keeping Ambrose in the initiative order in case he thinks up some cool scheme to get through the wall. If you're wondering why Vondal wasn't also sealed behind, it's because his player contacted me privately via IM and gave me instructions to get into the chamber. I assumed you'd want to stop in places that weren't on top of the trap; I hope I picked out good locations for you.

Tharl is standing by the cube with the SUN showing. Vondal is standing next to the cube with the MOON showing. Let me know if you'd like to spin those cube to have a different face showing (minor action)

Joryn and Finding, you are standing next to a translucent wall of souls. Reminds you of thick glass.

Initiative
18 Joryn
17 Tharl
07 Vondal
07 Finding
06 Ambrose
05 Ethereal Vorpal Skull-Blades (done)

Best of luck,
MilwaukeeJoe

  1. OOC: Note to those lurking and following along... Think you can do better than Lohmi did? If so, send me an email containing a dnd4e file of a second level dungeoneer using the rules described in http://slamdancr.com/wp/2011/04/weekly-grind-4e-an-introduction/.

If multiple people apply, I will do a d20 roll off for the winner.

  2. Lohmi eyes were so intent, that he almost missed the blades rising from the floor. His momentum didn't allow him to dodge, and his eyes widen in shock a moment before he was no more.

  3. Wiping a piece of Lohmi off of his face, Joryn turns in shock at his dead ally. Before pressing forward, Joryn regards the green energy and looks to see if he can shatter it in any way.

"Finding, do you think you can disable these horrific blades?!?"

    Tech:
Perception check? +3, Arcana? +1, Religion? +6 to see if I can find a weakness. Otherwise, i'm gonna bust through with Athletics +6.

OOC: Is it bad that all I can think about right now is that Fiend-Cursed Dagger Lohmi had on him.

OOC: I'm sure he would want you to loot his body.

  5. Just before the door closed, Ambrose mind is racing for possibilities and settles on a dungeoneering check. How to open the door and help his friends safely proceed, or join them if they successfully diffused the initial traps.

Next he analyizes the door with an arcane check.

    OOC:

    dungeoneering check last round
    arcane check this round

  6. Lohmi!! Ouch, are we talking up between the legs cut in half?

  7. Horrified, Tharl regrets that Lohmi is beyond his help. Recovering quickly, he examines the cube next to him, checking got mechanical traps that might be present. On preparation for more danger, Tharl summons his spirit companion.

Tech: My phone is being difficult, so no tech. :(

  8. [Ambrose]
Ambrose activates Detect Magic, and an image appears on the wall before him (the one that sealed him away from his companions). The image is of a succubus' face, leaning in with lips pursed as if to give a kiss.
OOC: To answer your question, yes, right up the middle.

    [Tharl]
Tharl doesn't think that the cube is trapped, although it seems to be a part of some mechanical device. It might open a secret door or open a wall closet full of Dark Bishops, he's not entirely sure.
OOC: I'sve been playing a ton of Deathkings of the Dark Citadel (1990's video game for the PC). That game both elates me and pisses me off at the same time.

    [Joryn]
Joryn thinks he could probably bust through the translucent barrier, but he might take some incidental damage in the process. Or he could attempt to Bless the barrier (Religion check) to release the souls that way.
Tech: DC14 religion check if Bless. Or lose a healing surge if brute force.

  9. Joryn pauses briefly and sheathes his longsword. Standing before the green screen of energy he whispers out a hushed prayer to the Raven Queen offering these souls some respite and release from their entombment here.

    Tech:
    Sheathing sword, minor action.
Blessing prayer, standard action (Religion +6)
Reserving move action to step through section of the green screen if it is disrupted, moving one square forward to see what the next room contains before trying to step out into it. (TRAPS MAKE JORYN NERVOUS!)

  10. Pale with shock, Finding nods as Joryn asks whether she can disable the traps. Flinching a little as she wipes away blood and gore that impedes her examination, she silently, and carefully, attempts to disarm the whirring blades.

Tech: thievery +8, perception +9, arcana +8 (all from memory, feel free to double check, I'm on my phone) - one standard, two minor as DM sees fit.

  11. [Joryn]
Joryn's faith isn't strong enough to breach the barrier.
Tech: Standard action used, rolled an 11. :(

    [Finding]
Finding discovers that the ethereal vorpal skull-blade trap cannot be disarmed.
Tech: Minor action used. Standard and move still available to use.

  12. Finding quietly relays her discovery to everyone else. "I'm sorry," she says. "The blades can't be disarmed. We're all going to have to be very careful."

She watches Joryn unsuccessfully try to free the souls from the wall. "Perhaps they are caught and trapped by means other than spiritual," she suggests and investigates the possibility of a magical solution.

    Tech: Arcana +9, minor.
I'll do the minor instead of a move, and defer my standard action pending the outcome of that.

  13. Finding discovers that indeed a Dispel Magic focused on the wall could destroy it.
Tech: DC14 Arcana would work. I wasn't sure if you were just looking to "see if it would work", or if you were actually attempting to do the dispel. Let me know and I'll make the roll.

    A couple of things:

    1. It's Labor Day weekend, I won't post again until Tuesday.

    2. I just submitted my first Fourthcore conversion to Sersa V! It's week 6, which is the room right after this one.

    Have a great holiday weekend!

  14. Should have clarified, sorry - yes, make the roll please.

  15. Finding casts Dispel Magic, and the barrier shatters like glass! The souls fly free and pass through the ceiling as if it wasn't there.

OOC: In the process of writing up the details of the second vestibule. More to come!

  16. What the heck, Ambrose thinks, I've kissed stranger things to get what I wanted. Leaning into the image of the succubus' face, he purses his lips and returns the offer of a kiss with a kiss.
