| The central, massive steel cube pulls your attention towards it. |
![]() |
| You start at J16/K16. Doors are at B9/B10 and S9/S10. |
Your main attention is taken by a massive steel cube (20' to a side) right in center of the room. Along with the many pillars, it blocks the view of the opposite side of the chamber.
The entire chamber hums with a low, resonant vibration.
OOC: When I run this at a table-top, I don't use Fog of War to hide the map areas... and I don't particularly feel like doing it now either. But, I won't describe things until you actually get line of sight, of course. Enjoy! -MilwaukeeJoe

[Hanrar]
ReplyDeleteStepping quietly into the foyer, the mage readies his staff in one hand, his new wand in the other, his eyes narrow as he steps forward, trying once again to feel along the weave to determine the nature of the magic streaming through the air. His staff crackles as he prepares for a potential fight...
Tech: Mive to J14, hide against the pilar, stealth+10, arcana +19, perception +10
El-Kal enters after Hanrar, following right behind.
ReplyDeleteOOC: do we want to fan out or all head in one direction? Also, pretty sure I played this level in DOOM. Just waiting to find out what that cube holds!
[Teryn]
ReplyDeleteQuickly taking in the massive room before her, Teryn darts through the party and enters the room, sticking to the right wall. Once near the southeast corner, she crouches down against the wall and peers around it, daggers out, attempting to discern what, if anything, sits atop the raised platform there.
Tech: Stealth +19 to P14, Perception +17 to determine what's on top of the platform
[Vesten]
ReplyDeleteVesten strides confidently into the room and sidesteps around Hanrar. He peers intently at the steel cube.
"What secrets do you hold? Are you magic or mundane?" he says as he cocks his head to the side.
Tech: Move to J13, Dungeoneering +10, History +8, Arcana +8
OOC: Sorry I missed so much back there. How hard does Vesten think it would be to scale the cube and get on top of it?
OOC: R-really dude? So Vesten's last name is Jenkins? Lets keep our fingers crossed and get ready to throw down.
DeleteHanrar readies Flame Column on anything that appears hostile
[Hanrar]
DeleteAs Vesten strides boldly into the room, the mage hisses to him. "Hold back!" And reaches to grab hold of him. Too late, he curses under his breath and moves to mirror Teryn's position, sweeping the room with a deadly glare.
Tech: Move to F14, stealth with Chameleon's Mask use Arcana +19 as check, ready Thunderlance and Wand of Disintegration should somekind of beastie jump out
[El-Kal]>
ReplyDeleteEl-Kal keeps a close distance to the entrance, and keeps an eye for threats... but sees none.
[Vesten]
Vesten approaches the steel cube and examines closely, but does not find any secrets. It is possible to climb. (DC 31 Athletics check, difficult)
[Teryn]
Teryn moves east and attempts to spy on what might be at the top of the balcony (supported by a rusty iron pillar). It's strangely dark up there, but she thinks she sees the hint of something mechanical. It reminds her of a catapult...?
[Hanrar]
Those drawing close to the pillars see a series of raised bumps along their circumferences. Hanrar recognizes this as Clocktick, the language spoken by constructs. Hanrar also senses that the rune circle (in the northwest corner) is unstable... you're not sure what will happen if you step within (OOC: i.e., produces random effects). Unlike Teryn, Hanrar can't get a good look at what's on the balcony.
[Yursil]
ReplyDeleteYursil idly scans the chamber himself, and then softly walks over to see what Hanrar found.
"Interesting. I have a ritual that would let me understand this."
OOC: Arcana +15, Perception +13 (To see if anything is hiding from us), Also Stealth +15
If desired, Yursil can spend 10 minutes to cast COmprehend Languages.
[Yursil]
ReplyDeleteYursil sidles up to Hanrar, and can sense the same off-kilter magic radiating from the rune circle.
The grotesques of the hall are finely crafted.
OOC: Let me know if you do decide to cast the ritual. I'm not as literal with the "time to cast" as what it states, but I do follow the module rules on what can be cast.
Brathu, armed and ready, follows Vesten to the cube. He is ready for anything to pop out.
ReplyDeleteOOC: the room looks dormant, maybe until we find something and bring it back? Or the circle is what created the cube and needs to be repaired? Either way, I'll let he mages proceed, and be ready to charge or make a run for it, whichever comes first.
El-Kal will follow the other mages...If there is something in the balcony, El-Kal eyes a way to climb up...
ReplyDeleteOOC: move to E15, near the mages but slightly around the corner. Guys, should I attempt to climb up?
[El-Kal]
ReplyDeleteWhile Brathu examines the southern part of the cube with Vesten, El-Kal moves to the west to examine the balcony. He spies a catapult at the top, just the hint of the wheels and the frame.
He also sees something new, tucked into a small hideaway (F16 on map). It's a raised stone square inlaid with the symbol of an inverted trident. It glows with crimson magic. El-Kal recognizes it as a short-range teleporter, meant to deliver one to another square of the same build!
[Teryn]
ReplyDelete"Interesting..." Teryn scrutinizes the rusty pillar.
Tech: How much would it take to destroy a balcony pillar?
The pillar can be brought down with a standard action and a DC 31 Athletics check.
Delete[Hanrar]
ReplyDeleteNaturally wary of unstable magic within the secluded tomb of a lich, the mage turns his attention instead to the Clocktick, attempting to decipher the script.
Tech: Cast 'Comprehend Language' Ritual, careful not to recite the inscription aloud, lest it be some kind of vocal trigger component.
[Hanrar]
ReplyDeleteMuch of the clocktick writing describes measurements and movements, and talks of gears within gears and things that constructs would ponder.
But within the text, you see this: "AN ARTIFACT WITH THE POWER TO DESTROY THE IRON LICH'S PHYLACTERY IS HIDDEN SOMEWHERE IN HIS TOMB."
OOC: Note, you received another rumor. This one is marked as Reliable.
OOC: So we know it's true. Yay! I imagine that's Wraithverge, which we already have one piece of
Delete[Teryn]
ReplyDeleteNoting that the pillars can be broken, Teryn moves along the south wall towards the two magi and then up towards the Western door to get a better look at the unstable circle and the body nearby, as well as whatever is behind the cube. Also: "Where is that humming sound coming from..."
Tech: Move (Stealth +19) to C11. Inspect the circle and the body (Perception +17, Heal +7) to determine cause of death.
[Hanrar]
ReplyDelete"An artifact of power..." He says softly, twisting his quarrel. He relays the information to his companions, nodding to Yursil "How much longer until we can use the power of your circlet once more? This artifact would be terribly useful if we can find it." With the script determined, he turns instead to the Circle of Runes, focusing his senses and knowledge to determine the nature of the glowing ring.
He also peers at the body within, quickly intoning a command word and turning his hand up, a spectral version of his own hand, fading away at the wrist appears in front of him. He moves his arm, guiding the hand to grab and move the body, adjusting it for better examination.
Tech: Move to C14, then C7, staying away from that unpleasant looking steel cube, Arcana +19, Insight +15, Perception +10, use Mage Hand to adjust and manipulate the body.
The adventure continues here.
