Vault of the Wyrm Prince: Clockwork Guard

Music: Atrium Carceri | Seishinbyouin | Hidden Crimes

Towering over the room is a colossal 40-foot tall clockwork steel construct of an ancient red dragon. Its eyes burn faintly red with malice.

You enter from the north door.
You hear the sound of spinning gears coming from within its rusted iron plates and scales, and can clearly see a large closed hatch on the beast's stomach. The enormous dragon stands motionless, completely blocking the hallway behind it, the only other obvious exit to the chamber.

At four other places in the room stand much smaller clockwork versions of the other chromatic dragons—white, blue, green, and black. Each of the lesser clockwork dragons holds a rusted steel egg in its claws. The mouths of each of these lesser dragons are open
and tilted back, as if waiting to be fed by a mother.

The light of the everburning torches mounted on the walls bathes the chamber in an eerie glow and gives you pause... you feel you are one step away from an early grave...

As the metallic dragon looms ahead, the ranger draws his crossbow and nocks an arrow on its trembling string. He aims down its sights for a tense moment, waiting for the gargantuan automaton to strike or move towards them. His sharp eyes glance towards the smaller metallic figures, awaiting their own retaliation on the intruding adventurers, but focuses on the larger of the five as he steps carefully into the hall.

Tech:Move to H3, Perception +7, ready action to fire on any sign of movement from the clockwork beast.

OOC: Thought I'd already posted this. Weird.

The Wizard does not enter yet, but peers from the doorway looking at the eggs clutched by each of the smaller dragons, ready to magically hold open the doorway if it tries to seal Grelloc in.

    Tech:
Look at the eggs in the smaller dragon's mouths. Are they all the same, or are there differences between them?
Readying an action to cast "Hold Portal" if the door tries to shut.

The rogue silently glides into the room and heads to the white dragon statue. He examines it carefully, looking for signs of traps, trapdoors, doors that are trapped, traps that are also doors, normal doors, hidden doors, and anything else that might be unusually "trappish" or "doorish" about the statue.

    Tech
    Thievery +9, Perception +6

You step a few inches into the room, and the steel beast remains motionless.

    Rolls: percerption 19.

    [Del-Kai]
The doors do not threaten to close, and without entering the chamber you're too far away to get any good views of the eggs.

    [Crx]
You spy a nearly invisible crack along the egg's perimeter, and you think it might be openable.

    Rolls: thievery +14, perception +17.

Crx peers into the open mouth of the dragon statue. Does their appear to be a receptacle for feeding? Any residue from previous feedings? Any mechanism that can be triggered?

Seeing that the automaton does not seem to react to his presence, he moves further into the room, carefully discharging his crossbow after removing the quarrel. He steps in towards the huge metallic dragon, his soft leather boots scraping across the stone floor as he peers at the smaller statues and the metal monster before them. His keen eyes scan for any hairline cracks in the floor ahead or tell-tale signs of pressure plates and trap-doors, his fingers twitching as his eyes keep drawing back towards the dragon looming above them, his blood running cold as he meets those ancient and smoldering eyes.

Tech:Perception +7: looking for anything strange about the floor around the statues or the dragon, anything seeming out of place about the dragon itself? Dungeoneering +7: Any scrape marks or shifted dust that might imply movement from the dragon or its metal brood or signs of secret doors or passages along the walls or floor?

  7. Two Rocks calls softly from the door to Crx, "Is the hatch on the dragon's belly locked? I can send the zephyr in to look around."

    [Tech]

That is, assuming that an air elemental can seep into a closed non-airtight space and look around.

Viewing within the open mouth of the small dragon, it does appear to be a receptacle. There is no residue to give you a hint on what should be poured within, however. It seems that deep within the mouth is a small slotted plate that might be a trigger of something.

Crx also recognizes the large dragaon as a clockwork colossus. It is said that the scales of such a beast are impenetrable and powered from within by a clockwork heart.

    [Grelloc]
Grelloc comes ever closer to the large dragon, but does not note any cracks or traps, or tell-tale signs of pressure plates or secret doors. However, the head of the dragon moves, always looking directly at Grelloc!

    Rolls: perception 15.

    [Two Rocks]
The belly does not look to be locked. However, every step you make closer to it seems to arouse its anger even more!

    OOC: Skill challenge!
Goal: The crusaders must work together to deactivate the clockwork colossus, and that means someone has to go inside. Tell me, how will you do it? Who will be the brave soul to attempt entry? Tell me what you do in action, and I will translate it to a skill roll.

  9. Del-Kai steps forward, his eyes on the giant clockwork dragon, but he walks to the black dragon statue instead. Holding up his dripping hand over the small dragon, he allows some of his acidic skin to fall inside, hoping there's a correlation with the abilities of the black dragon.

    [tech]
Trying to use my acid surge ability to drop acid-y skin inside of the open black dragon mouth. Maybe Arcana to try and use the power this way?

Motir steps up to the white dragon statue, drawing a vial filled with the icy concoction from the first room. He watches Del-Kai feed the black statue and, upon seeing his safety, empties the cool liquid down the gullet of the white statue.

Keeping his eyes on the watchful clockwork dragon, he notes his companions feeding the smaller dragons their personal elements. He approaches the green dragon, and after patting his pockets and pouches without finding anything, wishing he had brought some of the rot-moss poultice he sometimes brewed in his grove or even a bottle of scumble that might pass for an acceptable toxin.

Turning to his companions, he shrugs slightly and peers at the egg held by the dragonling, wondering if he could fit a blade into the seam noted by Crx and force it open. Thinking better for it, he looks up at the looming metal dragon, focusing on the metal hatch in its belly and stroking his fire-balded chin.

Does the hatch have a handle or something we could latch onto and open from a distance? The dragon's head follows Grelloc, does it make any other moves besides this the closer we get? Does it look like the eggs can be forced?

As your acid drips into the mouth of the black dragon, the egg cracks then opens side to reveal an iron Oversized Clamp (powers unknown).

    [Motir]
As the icy liquid is poured into the mouth of the white dragon, it's egg to opens suddenly to reveal an Evil Idol (+2 to saves).

    [Grelloc]
Indeed, the hatch does look to have a handle, if you can get close enough. The giant dragon is very active now, and might attack you if you attempt to enter the hatch. As for the eggs, you're not sure if it can be forced... you might have to attempt it to know for sure.

  13. Del-Kai looks at the oversized clamps with appreciation, but takes a step back away from the dragon. "My friends, I feel that we may not have the needed tools to address this mechanical beast. I suggest we retreat to the stairs in the crown room, and return here later."

  14. Crx agrees. He shuffles back out the door, thinking that there must be a poison and something that provides an electric shock elsewhere to gain an advantage against this metal behemoth.

  15. Crusaders, where will you go next?

    - Golden Crown Room, then ascending the stairs to the closed door.
    - Ghost Council Chamber, attempting to get past the river of fire.
    - Backtrack the way you came completely until you arrive at the first chamber, then choosing a different path.
    - Something else?

    You decide.

  16. You retreat from the clockwork dragon, retracing your steps to the Golden Crown chamber. From there, you ascend the stairs, pull the skull-chain to open the door.

Finding yourself back in the first room, you decide to try the southern door marked with the Wraith.

The adventure continues in the Shadow Sanctuary.
