Double doors swing open, revealing a low-ceilinged hexagonal chamber where vines and dead roots pierce the stone. The air reeks of spoiled meat. Where the vines part on the walls, you can see etchings of humanoid figures falling from the sky into a lake of fire. A phoenix is occasionally visible in the reliefs.

| Trapped in endless torment. |
| The six niches are not depicted on map. |
A six-sided column rises up in the center of the chamber. Each side bears a grid of stone faces hewn in the likeness of various creatures. The column blocks the view of the opposite side of the room.OOC: Be sure to click on the images to get the larger views.
Good Luck,
MilwaukeeJoe

[Tak-tha]
ReplyDeleteWith the mystery of the tablet put on pause, Tak-tha enters the room and circles around the column to the other side, to see what might be hiding. He glances at the humans, realizing they are trapped for a reason, and sadly it is unlikely he will be able to save them.
Tech
Walk clockwise around the column to H6, Perception +11
OOC
If this puzzle is what I believe it is, aka the game MasterMind, I can so rock this! My brother and I play this so much it's not even funny. :) If I find something similar to what I'm expecting to find, I can totally solve this puzzle today! That's what happens when you give an engineer a logic puzzle. :P
Tech
DeleteAnd Dungeoneering +9 as well if needed
Tak-tha enters the chamber and proceeds clockwise around the room. At the other side he finds another set of double doors. This set, however, has three unlit iron torches BOLTED to the doors.

and

OOC: Three torches pretty much confirms what I was looking for :)
ReplyDelete[Tak-tha]
After his walk through the room, Tak-tha approaches one of the trapped humans and bows his head, offering a quick prayer. "A puzzle we must solve here. With six trapped, six chances we will have." Walking back to the south face of the column, Tak-tha examines the column, making sure not to touch anything yet.
Tech
Usual checks on the column in case there are clues. I'm guessing each face is a button?
OOC: The room looks too bare for clues, though others can make checks if they wish. Unless the tablet is going to react to being in this room (seems too obvious being right outside this room but you never know), if our DM is online and no one objects, I can start on solving the puzzle.
And I just realized the subscribe to this thread option. Pretty nifty to keeping up with these individual threads
Delete[Tak-tha]
ReplyDeleteTak-tha examines the hexegon pedestal and discovers that each of the faces look like they can pull outward (like a reverse button).
The rest of the crew are still outside the chamber. One of them (who has it?) pulls out the tablet; it isn't reacting.
OOC: I was gonna wait, but I just realized I won't be able to post at all tomorrow, so...
ReplyDelete[Tak-tha]
With no clues on where else to start, Tak-tha reaches up and cautiously pulls out the red bird on the south face.
Nevdor enters the chamber, and starts to look around. He does try and get a better look at the writhing humans, perhaps they hold a clue. He takes a long look at the each of the Northern niches, then moves examine the pillar.
ReplyDeleteOOC: Perception/Insight +5, Thievery +9 (just in case it helps). I won't be touching the walls of force covering the niches, I just want to peak inside them...end movement on G5 and wait.
OOC: Oh, and I have the tablet in my possesion (finders keepers!). Any change when we enter the room, compared to the hallway?
ReplyDelete[Tak-tha]
ReplyDeleteTak-tha pulls one of the faces, Red/Bird/South. The face pulls out about the length of a forearm before it is immediately sucked back into the pillar!
Suddenly, a stone block comes crashing down on the humanoid trapped in the northwest niche. The blood oozes out where the wall of force doesn't have a full seal on the niche.
[Nevdor]
Nevdor enters the chamber as well, keeping an eye on the tablet. As soon as he crosses the chamber's threshold, writing appears on the tablet's face! It proclaims, "AVOID THE FACE OF THE BIRD."
To make matters worse, the doors leading into this chamber start to close with incredible strength...
OOC: Nevdor could still exit, but Tak-tha is too far away to try leave. For sake of "never splitting the party", I will assume you enter the chamber (before the doors close) unless you tell me otherwise.
[Nevdor]
ReplyDeleteExamining the niches, Nevdor finds them similar. A pathetic tortured being within, sealed in by a wall of force. As for the pillar, he can see that each face is a pullable button. Six sides, twelve faces on each side.
OOC: Of course the tablet reads "No bird" after I pull the bird :P Did anything happen with the torches?
ReplyDeleteThe torches did not react in any special way to your recent face choice.
ReplyDeleteOOC: Well, I either have this all wrong or I've confirmed the tablet speaks the truth. Only one way to know for sure!
ReplyDelete[Tak-tha]
Even though he was expecting it, Tak-tha still flinches when the human is killed. He bows his head and offers a quick prayer, thanking them for their sacrifice in their quest. He steps to his right and pulls the green lizard.
OOC: South-east green lizard (I think it's a lizard)
[Tak-tha]
ReplyDeletePulling... Green/Lizard/Southeast...
This time the two left torches bolted to the far door erupt in flame for a few seconds before extinguishing as the button is sucked back into the pillar.
As before, another trapped victim is murdered by Tak-tha's actions...
OOC: Whew, a reaction means I am doing this right.
ReplyDelete[Tak-tha]
Though visibly shaken, the lighting of the torches also renews a bit of spirit inside of Tak-tha. Offering another prayer for another human gone, he moves further to the right and pulls the green lizard again.
Green lizard North-east
[Tak-tha]
ReplyDeletePulling... Green/Lizard/Northeast...
Only one torch lights this time, the leftmost one. A third torture victim has his life ended by a stone block from above. The southern three are all that remain...
All right, narrowed down to the south-east face. So now to determine either green or lizard
ReplyDelete[Tak-tha]
Tak-tha bows his head and offers another prayer, then steps back to his left. After a moment of thought, he pulls the green fish stone.
Green, fish, southeast
[Dervan]
ReplyDeleteDervan sighs as two of the group rush in impetuously and start moving around the chamber. Seeing the doors being to close, he shrugs, and disappears for a moment, only to reappear inside the chamber.
"Did you ever consider waiting for us?" he says, taking a look around the chamber.
His brow furrows when he sees the three humans in the southern niches, and then confusion comes over his face for a moment as he looks at the northern niches.
"Don't tell me you've been killing them..." he says quietly.
OOC: I'm guessing this may be like Mastermind. A torch lights up each time our selection matches one aspect of the real button.
So far we've done
Red/ Bird/ South - 0 torches
Green/Lizard/Southeast - 2 torches
Green/Lizard/Northeast - 1 torch
I'm guessing that Southeast is one part of it.
It's not Bird, red or south or northeast.
It could be either green or lizard.
Blue, fish, and bug have not been tried yet.
Perhaps green/bug/southeast would be a good try?
Then green/fish/southeast
Finally blue/lizard/southeast.
[Thundic]
ReplyDelete"Gods above..." He breathes, looking at the trapped souls within the walled-off chambers, wincing each time one meets their fate in the course of the holy quest. He breathes a prayer while he nervously watches as Tak-tha deduces the puzzle, shifting from one foot to another as he edges closer to the slowly closing doors.
This puzzle is either solved now or on my next move.
ReplyDeleteIf all three torches light, we're done.
If only two torches light, I pull Green Insect and we're done.
If only one torch lights, I pull Blue Lizard and we're done.
If no torches light, I give up :P
[Tak-tha]
ReplyDeletePulling... Green/Fish/Southeast...
All three torches light this time! You hear the sound of rushing sand from within the hex column as the east door opens with a heavy click. The three remaining victims vanish, spared their horrific fate.
OOC: Congratulations, of the times I've run this, you've completed the first of Kotaresh's challenges with the fewest pulls. Since you kicked ass on this in record time, I don't have the next chamber quite ready. It will drop sometime tomorrow with a new post. Feel free to continue RP here if you like...
[Tak-tha]
ReplyDelete"I had no choice, and they could not be saved. The gods are certainly cruel in their trials." Tak-tha adds on a bit of Thri-kreen cursing before offering another prayer, glad to be done with this room.
OOC: If I had known no bird beforehand, the puzzle would have gone as such
1: South/Red/Dragon - 0 torches
2: Southeast/Green/Fish - All 3 torches
How's that for a possible record time :P
With this done, I'm gonna get back to work now. Catch everyone tomorrow on our new room!
OOC: For those of you wanting to challenge yourself with this puzzle, you can play it here: http://slamdancr.com/game.php
ReplyDeleteOOC: I apologize for this puzzle going so quickly. Some of you might have woken up and went, WTF? as the puzzle came and went.
ReplyDeleteI would have slowed Tak-tha down if I sensed he was just randomly guessing, but I could see strategy in the pics... so I kept going.
But no worries, plenty of more Kotaresh fun to come!
