Revenge of the Iron Lich: Trial of Chests

Be wary of riddles and unguarded treasures...
The walls of this low-ceilinged chamber are covered top-to-bottom in cracked, peeling plaster murals depicting naked men and women being corralled into carriage-sized iron maidens by armored skeletons.

Along the west wall are three alcoves lit by torches, each containing an oversized chest – one bronze, one silver, and one copper. A plaque is fixed to a dais before the alcoves. A gilded door bordered by an ornate archway is set into the east wall.

The plaque reads (in common):
You teleport in at F7.
THE IRON LICH SPEAKS SOOTH NAUGHT BUT ONCE! THE TREASURE IS IN THE BRONZE CHEST. THE TREASURE IS NOT IN THE SILVER CHEST. THE TREASURE IS NOT IN THE BRONZE CHEST.
Nearby stands a solid gold statue of a robed human figure; he's staring in shock at where his left hand should be, horror etched on his face... but his hand is missing.

OOC: A riddle! Let's see how you fare, crusaders...

  1. OOC: logic puzzle! Woot! Ok, so the there is one true statement here, and the sentences about the bronze chest cancel each other out. So if either of those two statements are true, the sentence about the silver chest is false and therefore containing the treasure. Or, at least, it's down to the gold and silver chests.

Not that I want to be turned into gold, so if anyone wants to visually inspect before I chance a grab at the silver chest, go right ahead...if another clue reveals itself, then I'll hold off.

    1. Sorry, meant copper, not gold. Looked at the image, not the text.

Tumbling through the portal, the mage stands, brushing himself off, surprised, and not just a little bit relieved that he isn't awash in flames.

He studies the plaque for a moment, his eyes darting from the chests and the golden statue. He smirks as he turns to his companions. "Perhaps we should not be so greedy as this fellow... I doubt the Iron Lich would so readily reward those who have bested his trials."

Leaving the chests untouched, he moves to inspect the gilded door, studying its surface and reaching out with his senses, trying to discern any arcane presence coming from the shining surface.

Tech: Perception +10, Arcana +19, move to F1

Hanrar's getting some serious warding magic from the chests.

Also, he spies something unusual where a piece of the cracked wall plaster has given way (east wall). It looks like some strange symbols, and the plaster is covering it up.

Upon seeing the chests and the text, Teryn's face falls. "Oh boy, this is not exactly my area of expertise. I'll just, uh, be over here." Noticing Hanrar's discovery of the symbols under the plaster, Teryn takes a few minutes while the others are working out the puzzle to check the rest of the walls in the room for hidden layers or secret doors.

Tech: Inspect the walls of the room further (Perception +17, truesight). Inspect the door for locked/unlocked status and traps as well.

Drawing his dagger, the mage crouches and carefully scrapes away the plaster, careful not to disturb the etchings beneath. He attempts to translate them as he goes along, pushing his senses along the weave, searching for any warning flags coming from the sigils.

Slowly, Hanrar excavates a most interesting series of symbols from underneath the cracked plaster. They do not radiate any magic, as far as he can tell. They are of no known magical set of runes that any of you know of.

OOC: See addendum imagery for a picture of the symbols.

    1. OOC: Nice! There are 26 letters in the series. Ten bucks says it's a code that we can use to translate something else later.

The mage studies the runes for a moment, then pulls a scrap of parchment from his pack and jots the characters down for future reference.

OOC: Aww yeah, cryptograms! No repeating symbols though, so it’s likely a cypher. Sweet, we might actually get some awesome loot from this find.

OOC: Oops, lunch break is over, out of time for a while. Will have to post the rest of this after I do some work. #TheDMisAnAholeMuahaha #WritingUpDeathScenesTakesTime

As nothing horrible happens to Brathu, Vesten releases the breath he'd been holding.

"Well, that was fortunate. Surely the Raven Queen has guided our hand in this chamber."

Aerrant walks over to see the runes. He glances over Hanrar's shoulder before giving him a friendly pat on the back.

"Treasure and a clue for later! Truly we are blessed at this moment. Well done, Hanrar."

OOC: Did we just "arrive" in the room? So the one exit is all there is?

    1. OOC: You teleported in from the chamber titled, "Dismal Descent", and it seems there's only one obvious exit, the door in the east wall.

"A gilded door bordered by an ornate archway is set into the east wall."

Standing and dusting himself off, the mage smirks as he turns to see the treasures found by his comrades. "I am truly surprised, perhaps this Lich has been waiting for us to come and destroy him for a long time to leave us such wondrous gifts."

He slips the parchment into his pack, turning towards the door again. He takes a deep breath and pushes on the gilded portal, eagerly awaiting further trials from this undead sorcerer...

After casually inspecting the runes, Aerrant walks back over to the chest and takes the wings out in a careful and almost loving manner. He takes his pack off and sets it down beside him. Holding them in his hands, he bows his head and says a short prayer to the Raven Queen, thanking her for her favor. He then takes the wings and lifts them over his head. As they touch his shoulder blades, the magic takes hold and the wings become translucent and take on the appearance of black feathers tinged in blood. Concentrating, Aerrant's feet rise a few inches off the ground. He then spends a few moments hovering about in a circle. Satisfied, he retrieves his pack.

"I guess this makes me a winged avenger of death now, eh brother?" Aerrant winks at Brathu.

OOC: As long as no one objects...
