| This hallway is lined with bizarre grotesques, carved by enslaved mountain dwarves. |
Choosing to head west from the Great Hall, and after carefully examining the western doors for traps, you open them to find a hallway that leads west. The hallway quickly turns south. Searching your way forward, you make it to the corner.
A large closed tome rests on top of it between two candles.
OOC: To keep things moving, and since I heard some opinions talking about exploring west, I pushed you in that direction. Feel free to try a different direction from the Great Hall if you wish. Good luck! -MilwaukeeJoe

| Within view of the altar, you see a closed set of double doors to your right. |

[Hanrar]
ReplyDeletePeering ahead, the mage spots the iron altar, its mithril etching shimmering with an earthly gleam in the faint light. He rummages around in his pack, producing the mithril skull, holding it up and smirking softly. "What do you think?" He asks the party as he guesses at its weight, hoping for less than five pounds.
[Teryn]
ReplyDelete"Huh, interesting. His spellbook, maybe? Seems a little too obvious out here in the open, though. I'll check it out." Teryn moves carefully towards the altar, inspecting the floors, walls, and ceilings for traps. Once at the altar, Teryn takes a hard look at the book and altar for any sign of mechanical workings that would betray a trap there.
Tech: Perception +17 for traps and inspecting the book without touching it.
[Teryn]
ReplyDeleteTeryn searches here way right up to the iron altar. To her right, she spies a close set of double doors.
Looking all about without touching, she does NOT see any traps about the tome or altar.
OOC: Added an addendum image above showing the closer view of the tome, altar, and doors.
ReplyDelete[Yursil]
ReplyDeleteYursil walks up behind Teryn. Something at least remotely interesting was happening. He idly scans the tome, the altar, and the surroundings for anything interesting.
Tech: Perception +13, Arcana +15, History +15 - anything written on the face of the tome?
[Yursil]
ReplyDeleteYursil examines the tome visually (only). It's bound in demonskin, he can tell... there's no markings on the binding or cover to indicate its contents. He does not detect magic about it.
Brathu
ReplyDeleteBrathu follows the mages down the hallway, looking for trouble. Upon seeing the demonskin book, Brathu snorts "Let's just destroy the book, I doubt much good will come from it"
OOC: Arcana +11, Dungeoneering +15, Perception +15.
A Demonskin book? Out there for anyone to steal? El-Kal doesn't trust it.
ReplyDeleteOOC: Do we have any clues that suggest we need a book? A rumor I've missed? If not, maybe we should just focus on the door ahead and skip this book...
[Teryn]
ReplyDelete"I don't like it. My gut is telling me it's dangerous. Do we even need the thing?" No longer interested in the strange book, Teryn moves towards the doors, checking to see if they're open and if any exotic traps await the one who does open it.
Tech: Perception +17 on the doors. Are they locked/trapped? Is the mode of entry normal?
OOC: I don't see a compelling reason to do anything with the book, to be honest. I say let strange objects covered in demonskin lie unless we get some intel that it would be useful. Or unlikely to eat us alive.
[Yursil]
ReplyDelete"Demonskin, how interesting." Yursil says, eyes glancing over the cover.
"Well, it is most likely dangerous, but I can't pass up something this interesting. Why don't you all give me some space while I look?" His rasps sound almost excited.
OOC: I know it's dangerous, but I'm willing to risk opening it up, but not risk everyone else in the party.
Brathu will way the group back to the corner, and let Yursils curiosity have it's way. Some have benefitted already from the magics in here, and Brathu will not risk it...
ReplyDeleteOOC: not gonna stop you, but if you get possessed, we're putting you down. Oh, and make sure to proclaim "Klaatu barada niktu" When you touch it...
[Teryn]
ReplyDelete"Oh jeez, ok. I'll just...stand back here." Teryn moves back with the paladin. "It's not that I'm scared, you know. It's just that magic huts!"
"good luck to you Yursil..."
ReplyDeleteOOC: run away! Magic missiles at the ready as a reaction if Yursil starts to transform or is attacked.
[Teryn]
ReplyDeleteBefore backing away, Teryn examines the doors. They are not locked, nor trapped.
[Brathu and Yursil]
Both of you cast Detect Magic, but do not sense any auras about the demonskin-bound tome.
And then Brathu backs away, nice and slow.
[Yursil]
ReplyDeleteYursil gives the barest hint of a smile at Teryn. "Not scared?" he says softly.
With that, he turns back to the tome. First he reaches down and touches the cover to see if anything happens.
[Yursil]
ReplyDeleteAs Yursil touches the cover, his head is wracked in extreme pain! He recovers as the tome disintegrates to dust, and realizes that all rituals he once knew have been wiped from his mind.
OOC: Trap! You have lost all rituals. Also, pick one of your trained skills. You lose training in that skill. The book disintegrates.
[Yursil]
ReplyDeleteYursil reels back from the book, clutching at his head. The pain...
Breathing deeply, Yursil begins to recover. He carefully takes an inventory of himself. He seemed...fine for a once dead person. Yet, something seemed missing. It took him awhile to figure it out.
OOC: Rats.
Going to sacrifice the bonus training Yursil has in Stealth.
OOC: Haha, oh well. Shall we continue to head west?
ReplyDeleteThe adventure continues with Dismal Descent, with Teryn opening the doors.
