Crucible of the Gods: Asar-Segt's Challenge Revealed

After investigating the bookshelves and tables and the runes upon the clay, you all realize that the suggestions of Asar-Segt's trial involves finishing the golem creation proves to be TRUE.

OOC: I'm going to stop beating around the bush and get straight to it. This not a skill challenge... it's two that are happening simultaneously! In the section below, I will reveal the DC numbers you will need to achieve, but not the actions you need to take. That you will have to figure out on your own.

SKILL CHALLENGE: COMPLETE THE INVOCATION
Complete the invocation scribed in runes on the clay. You must gain four successes before three failures.
Primary DC: 21
Secondary DC: 13
Gambit DC: ???

SKILL CHALLENGE: CONSTRUCT THE GOLEM
Contruct and animate the clay golem. You must gain eight successes before three failures.
Primary DC: 21
Secondary DC: 13
Gambit DC: ???

The Jade: The three jades taken from the mouths of the mummies contain potent magic that can aid in the construction of the golem. You may ‘consume’ one of the jades after failing a skill check during the challenge. If you do so, the jade is destroyed and I'll add 1d6 to your check result. A dungeoneer may only consume one jade per check.

Gambits: You might be wondering what a Gambit DC is... if you wish, you may attempt to roll against this unknown value. If you succeed, you will not only gain one success but also an advantage. Failing the roll, however, will not only earn you one failure, but also a complication. I will assume you do NOT attempt a gambit unless you specifically state it in your post.

If the above seems confusing, forget the numbers and just focus on what you would do. You might consider yourself a primary actor, or a helper. What can you do to help? The more specific you are in describing your actions, the better.

Good Luck!
MilwaukeeJoe

  1. Selvantis does find items on the shelves that can help with both challenges, provided you roll well enough on skill checks to understand the instructions!

  2. ooc: Do we need to specify which challenge we are working on, or do you decide based on what we say we are doing? Anyway on with the show...

    [Arden]
Once everyone has entered the room it becomes obvious to Arden that this is a mental challenge from Asar-Sagt rather than a physical one. He puts out the torch and puts it away for now.

"Lets see what we can do about this golem. It seems that we must complete the inscription." Thinking back to Basic Golems in his sophomore year at the Mage Academy, Arden reviews the books and scrolls looking for clues to the arcane ritual that completes the golem.

tech: Arcana +10 to identify the tomes and scrolls that apply to golem.

  3. [Arden]
Arden gets started, but it seems that he must have slept through some of those golem classes....

Tech: (Complete the Invocation) Roll:16 vs DC:21. 0 Successes, 1 Failure.

  4. OOC: You can specify the challenge you wish your actions to go to, or you can let me decide based on narrative.

  5. [Tak-tha]
Tak-tha walks back over to the block of clay and walks around it, trying to remember his natural knowledge of golems to point out how to build one.

    Tech
Nature +11 to Construct the Golem

  6. Nevdor, didn't even bother to show to golem 101, let alone master it. But he he can be proactive. He will help Arden in his search of the books along the wall for something "golem" worthy.

OOC: Focusing on completing the invocation first, I will try to use "aid another" on Arden's next Arcana check. +4 vs the DC. Also, we know from the player handout that Asar-Sagt demands sacrifices for his trials. Can I search the room for something that looks sacrifical (besides my beating heart...)? Perception/Insight +5, Dungeoneering +5. Damn I should have put more focus onto my skills for this.

  7. [Bhareg]
Looking back and forth between the library and the clay, Bhareg notes, "Well, I'm not that great at the arcane magicks. But - if you find the right runes, I'm very good at forgery. I can also help if we need to shape the thing."

He looks over at the mummies. "Also, I've heard unsubstantiated rumors that there may be something interesting inside those embalmed folks." Tapping his staff against the ground, he muses, "Treasure? Or a swarm of deadly insects? Either way, I'm willing to sacrifice these jars of oil right there at their feet. Just in case."

OOC: +11 Thievery for forgery, possibly +7 Athletics or +6 Endurance to help shape the golem.

  8. OOC: I think it would be best if we just leave the mummies alone and not bother them. Also, I was assuming that since this was a skill challenge, we were limited to one skill check attempt until we had results back.

    1. OOC: Good point - I think I'm just throwing around ideas then. Any feel like they stick for people?

  9. [Selvantis]

After retrieving the various tomes and scrolls that seem to reference the golem creation, he attempts to match the uncompleted runes with the strings of text on the scrolls. He collaborates with Nevdor, Tak-Tha and Arden, recalling a conversation with a hedgewizard whom he had befriended who was bragging about his recently completed homunculus and the creation therein. Perhaps the same methods could be of use here?

    Tech: Nature +1, Insight +3

  10. Before this post (win/loss):
    Complete the Invocation: 0/1
    Contruct the Golem 0/0

    [Tak-tha]
Tak-tha's knowledge of the molding of clay (nature) does come in handy, and the golem begins to take shape.
Tech: 1 success to Contruct the Golem

    [Nevdor]
Nevdor gives Arden pointers in magic! Also, Nevdor realizes that blood will help Contruct the Golem.
Tech: +2 to next arcana check. Also, bleeding 1 healing surge worth will give 1 success in Construct the Golem, usable only once. Let me know if you do this.

    [Bhareg]
Bhareg focuses on helping with completing the invocation, and his forgery of runes from the book to the clay is helpful indeed. Also, just helping hold up the clay and keeping it from falling over...
Tech: 1 success to Complete the Invocation. +2 to next Contruct the Golem attempt

    [Selvantis]
Selvantis' memories about the hedgewizard story does bring insight into the situation!
Tech: 1 success to Contruct the Golem

    After this post (win/loss):
Complete the Invocation: 1/1, +2 to next check
Contruct the Golem: 2/0, +2 to next check

  11. OOC: Feel free to repeat your actions above, even doing something like, "I make arcana checks until we win or 2 failures are accrued." Or, try something new.

    ReplyDelete
  12. [Tak-tha]
Recognizing his one strength in the challenge, he focuses all of his concentration on working the clay into the proper form. With the importance of the task in front of them, he is willing to sacrifice his own health if needed to secure its completion.

    Tech
Continue with Nature +11 checks on Construct the Golem until success.
If we accrue two failures for that skill challenge, Tak-tha will sacrifice a healing surge for an automatic success.

  13. [Arden]

With Nevdor's eagle eye showing the way Arden takes another crack at the tomes and scrolls.

tech: Arcana +10 (+2 from Nevdor's assist) to figure out the rest of the invocation script.
