Beyond the metal double doors, you see a wizard's laboratory. You feel the tinge of energy in the air; the mystic chamber is charged with magic. Motes of lightning dance like fireflies across the low arched ceiling and copper-plated walls.
| You are near G6/G7 (at the time of this post). |
At the center is a wide, circular stone basin filled with murky water. A slab of rotten clay the size of an ogre stands half-submerged inside of it. You can smell it as soon as the doors opened.
To your left and right are several moldering bookshelves, lining the walls. In front of the shelves stand warped wooden tables covered with all manner of vials, arcane reagents, and strange ingredients.
Finally, propped up in niches along the far wall are three regal mummified humans, each wrapped in the dried leaves of the maize plant. You see the glint of a precious gem; a jade has been set into each of their mouths.
OOC: You are not in combat, so exact positioning is not needed, nor do you have to stay in Standard/Move/Minor actions at the moment. I'll let you know if this changes. Good luck! -MilwaukeeJoe
[Arden]
ReplyDeleteArden feels a great desire to run in and start poking at things and lifting the lids on jars, but this is not his first mystical wizard's laboratory and he tempers his desire with the knowledge that it is usually better to let the sturdy ones go in front. So holding his orb out in front of him he scans the room as best he can from the doorway for any arcane traps or dangers.
tech: Arcana +10
[Selvantis]
ReplyDeleteStanding in awe of the scene before him, Selvantis takes a moment to search the immediate area, scanning the flagstones at his feet for pressure-plates and pitfalls as he steps gingerly into the room.
Tech:
Move through F6/F7 and E6/E7, searching each before passing through. Perception +6, Dungeon
+6
[Tak-tha]
ReplyDeleteTak-tha eyes the room curiously, following in the footsteps of his fellow adventurers. His curiousity is drawn to the muddy...thing directly in front of him.
Tech
Assuming no dangers are found on the way in, inspect the mound of clay with Perception +11, Dungeoneering +11, Nature +9
[Bhareg]
ReplyDeleteThe ashen monk tucks his staff into the crook of his arm and pulls a couple of jars from his pack.
Slowly following Tak-tha around the pool in the center of the room, he notes, "I really don't like the look of that... thing. Does anyone have a good way to light this oil if and when the time comes?" He raises the jars and looks a little pointedly at Arden. "Other than the torches on the walls, of course."
OOC: Perception +10, Thievery +11 - looking for drains, machinery, etc, that might make dealing with the probable clay golem either easier or harder. I'll leave the magickiness of the books and religiosity of the mummies to those who are better qualified.
[Arden]
ReplyDeleteCasting Detect Magic, Arden taps into the magical realm. Besides a general sense of "magic all about you," he detects minor evocation auras from motes of lightning that dance about the ceiling. He's also getting some kind of strange aura from the clay blob; a closer inspection might reveal more detail.
[Selvantis]
While Arden focuses on the magical, Selvantis focuses on the mundane (which can kill you just as easily). No traps that he can sense or detect.
[Tak-tha]
Tak-tha approaches the basin, noting its smooth adobe brick contruction. The foul water held within is thick with mud. The clay mound is vaguely humanoid-shaped, and a detail almost escapes Tak-tha's notice... almost! He sees faint runes on the clay's surface, and while he doesn't know as much in the ways of magic as a learned wizard does, he does happen to know that these runes are of an incomplete invocation of Golem creation.
Tech: Natural 20 on the knowledge skill check, granting you a great deal of new information!
[Bhareg]
Bhareg looks all about for mechanical things. There are a few curiosities on the shelves; remnants of discarded experiments and such. Nothing that seems to be what Bhareg is looking for, however.
[Tak-tha]
ReplyDeleteTak-tha eagerly waves over the nearest arcane expert to point out his discovery. "I don't think we have to worry about it," he says, "I think we have to complete it. Finishing whatever ritual could be the first part of the trial."
The Thri-kreen steps over to the mummies, hoping to gain another bit of insight.
Tech
Same checks as before, but definitely not touching anything just yet
[Tak-tha]
ReplyDeleteTak-tha sees that any skin that has been exposed has dried and shriveled. Their arms are folded across their chest, and a scrificial dagger is propped in both hands. The jades in their mouths glint off the light of your torches. Tak-tha also hears a faint, muted buzzing sound coming from within the mummies' bodies.
[Selvantis]
ReplyDeleteStill scanning the area for any hidden traps, the half-elf follows Tak-Tha to observe the mummies, putting his ear close to one of the desiccated corpses chests and listening closely.
tech: Perception +6, Nature +1(hah), Dungeon +6
[Selvantis]
ReplyDeleteSelvantis does hear the buzzing within the mummies, reminding him of an insect swarm.
[Arden]
Arden also detects some powerful magic within the jade gems.
[Selvantis]
ReplyDeleteMaking a face, the ranger backs away from the dusty forms.
"They're full of something... bugs it sounds like." He shivers slightly, hands resting on the pomells of his swords. "I HATE bugs..." He stops short, looking over at Tak-tha, smiling awkwardly. "...Present company excluded, of course."
He chuckles softly and turns to investigate the golem.
[Selvantis]
ReplyDeleteHaving been discovered by Tak-tha, you can all see the runes about the clay. There's a series of them, then a long gap, devoid of runes.
[Tak-tha]
ReplyDeleteTak-tha lets out a few low buzzes and clicks but doubts he will get a response from the insects inside of the mummies. Shaking his head, he walks over to the tables, investigating any non-magical ingredients that might be there.
[Tak-tha]
ReplyDeleteThe shelves and tables contain a wide variety of tomes and tools, and strange ingredients. Tak-tha gets a strong impression that this is truly a working laboratory, for experiments and arcane creations.
[Selvantis]
ReplyDeleteThe ranger nods to Arden, gesturing for him to take a look at the runes traced into the muddy half-golem. "So if this is the challenge, what do we do next?" He peers at the stretches of blank clay and then joins Tak-Tha at the table and shelves, looking for some kind of tome or scroll with the proper incantations to complete the next sequence of runes.
[Arden]
ReplyDeleteArden tells Bahreg "I can set things on fire but it takes me while, a torch would be faster" Arden puts away his dagger and pulls a torch from his pack, pausing a few seconds in concentration, the torch springs to life. Now that it the way is clear Arden ventures into the room and gets a good look at the runes on the clay and then walks over to see if those jades in the mummy's mouths have anything to show him.
tech: sheath dagger. get out torch. Prestidigitation to light the torch. Arcana +10 on the clay figure and Arcana +10 on the mummies.
OOC: since prestidigitation in a standard. I hope if fire is needed I can toss the torch rather than use a standard in battle.
Nevdor enters the room, but stays quite so the wizards can get there bearing. After listening to much discussion, he asks them all "Surely the eater of flames and bringer of magic would test us our arcane competency. We must have to put Humpty Dumpty back together again..." I'll let you mages figure this one out.
ReplyDeleteOOC:
Enter room, stand in F5. Also, do I know anything about golem creation? Arcana +4, Dungeoneering +5
