Crucible of the Gods: Fiery Skeleton Flails!

Tak-tha keeps on with the investigation, gathering more numbers and possibly more clues. Skirting the known pit, he arrives at the central southern alcove. Doesn't look trapped. Perhaps the northern ones are trapped with the crushing ceiling traps, and the southern ones are not? This trapdoor yield the number... 5.

Just then, Hanar Hammerforge enters the room, just in time to see the stone guardian materialize near the north wall... a ten-foot-tall stone golem of roughly humanoid shape, glowing with protective runes that leave trails of crimson smoke when it walks! Its head is carved in the shape of an eagle. In each of its fists, the guardian clutches a wriggling burning skeleton that it swings like a flail!

And if that isn't bad enough, the flames ignite (like a pilot light) on the many ceiling's holes. You're in the broiler, but the heat has yet to come. (Note: Flame jets are only in the main area and stairs, but NOT in the alcoves or altar area.)

Some of you might wonder... could we escape? Didn't one of us smartly wedge the door open for such a thing?

Outside the chamber is Aramil, still contemplating entering. He's delayed too long, he realizes, when the floor beneath him turns to arcane dust... he drops out of sight into a pit beneath the hexagonal chamber. You do not see his death, but you do hear the sickening sound of a wooden stake impaling his flesh. Probably broke half the bones in his body too.

OOC: Alas Aramil, RIP. We barely knew ye. But for the rest of you, our first combat has begun! Up until now, you've been posting at-will and I've been responding in kind. Combat is not too different, but you are only allowed a single "standard/move/minor" combination per main post (and action point, you all have one). There isn't initiative, really. You go when you post; if I want to stop you... I'll just block commenting!

Map above. If I errored in your position above, let me know and I'll get it fixed.

I plan to post monster actions on Tuesday, next week. That gives you the weekend and a workday to get your actions in. If I post before you do... tough luck.

Good Luck!
MilwaukeeJoe

Dervan's eyes widen in alarm as the...thing comes out of nowhere. He immediately tries to identify the creature while raising his orb. He brings in down sharply, sending a wave of sonic energy at the thing.

    OOC: Standard: Using Thunderwave
+6 vs Fortitude. Close blast 3. Does 1d6+5 damage and pushes the target 2 squares.

Delaying my move action until I see if the attack works or not.

Free action: identify the thing! Dungeon +7/Arcana +12/Religion +10/History +7

The thunderwave works well against the golem, pushing him back almost into the pit! You recognize it as a stone guardian construct.

Tech: 6 damage and you push the stone guradian 2 squares.

Dervan quickly beats a hasty retreat, carefully moving around the edge of the pit.

OOC: Move action to G5, avoiding the pit.

Let's see if we can knock it in the pit. :)

    1. Actually, Dervan pushes it three squares. Don't forget the Orb Expertise feat :)

  5. Dervan moves to G5.

The golem remains as is, teetering on the edge of the pit.

  6. [Tak-tha]
Tak-tha turns around in surprise at the sudden change of the atmosphere in the room. As his eyes settle on the statue in front of him, he quickly readies both his weapons. "That wasn't here a moment ago, right?" He takes a moment to focus, his body posture shifting, before he takes off, charging straight for the thing.

    Tech
If not considered to already be wielding both weapons, minor action and free action (with Multiple Arms Racial ability) to do so.

Minor action to assume Aspect of the Dancing Serpent.

Charge the golem (end at M5, avoiding the pit)
    +11 vs AC
1d8+5 (+1d8 from Power Strike if I hit)

Also follow up with Dual Weapon Attack if I hit
    +9 vs AC
    1d6+4

Whether hit or miss, shift to L6 as a free action

  7. [Bhareg]
"Ok, Dervan Orbmaster, you say it's a stone guardian construct? What's that mean in killing terms? Lightning? Fire? Divine radiance?"

Evidently deciding the answer doesn't matter much right this second, Bhareg makes his move. His cloak billows up as he moves, revealing the unlikely heavy armor, and he makes several exploratory strikes at the stone monstrosity.

    [Tech]
Move: Steel Wind to N-5 (assuming the golem is in N3/O4), avoiding any known danger zones and OAs
Standard: Steel Wind on the golem (it's a close blast, if that matters)
       Attack: +4 vs Reflex
       Hit: 1d8+4 damage
Flurry of Blows: on a hit, 5 damage and slide towards the pit

OOC: Was going to wait for Tak-tha's action to resolve, but realized hit or miss, it wouldn't change mine. Also, if the opportunity arises, Bhareg will be using Lyth's Divine Boast.

  9. [Tak-tha]
Tak-tha charges the stone guardian delivering a powerful attack that breaks a chunk of the stone off its torso.

Tech: Charge hits for 13 damage. Secondary Dual Weapon Attack missed.

    [Bhareg]
Bhareg also charges in with his quarterstaff, following up on the opening that Tak-tha made. With his flurry of blows, he manages to push the monstrosity into the pit!

Tech: 12 points damage and the stone guardian falls into the pit! It takes 7 more damage from the fall. Stone Guardian is bloodied.

OOC: Hanar, I didn't process your actions since the Stone Guardian is in the pit. Feel free to delete you proposed action above and re-do, or leave it stand, although you may not be able to attack if you do.

  10. [Thundic]

Seeing the Guardian in the pit, he takes a moment to draw an arrow along his shortbow and aim for the chink in it's stone skin Tak-tha carved, letting it fly towards the weakened rock.

    Move to L5
    Attack +6 vs AC
    Hit 1d8+6

  11. [Thundic]
Thundic's arrow flies true, hitting the exact spot he was aiming for!

Tech: Even with AC bonuses for cover, your roll was good enough. You did 14 points of damage. Well done!

  12. OOC: I've heard from Dervan, Tak-tha, Bhareg and Thundic this round, leaving Hanar and Nevdor left to post actions. You have today to do so, and tomorrow I will post for the enemies. Looking forward to your posts!

  14. [Hanar Hammerforge]
Hanar draws into the middle northern alcove. As he steps in, he briefly notes a small trapdoor at the back of the alcove, engraved with the number 4. Turning his attention to the pit, he throws his hammer! However, he finds his swing is too strong. It lands against the wall of the pit instead of hitting the Stone Guardian within.

Tech: Nice attempt, but poor roll.

  15. Seeing that his comrades are such adapt warriors, Nevdor isn't sure whats more dangerous, the stone guardian or the rolling flames on the ceiling. Nevdor pulls a dagger, it flies from his hand in one smooth motion towards the guardian. The moment the dagger is loosed, Nevdor retreats to Alcove 4, praying it will protect him from harm.

    OOC:
Ranged basic attack vs the guardian, +7 vs AC, 1d4+4 (+2d6 if I have CA)then move to Q10.
Minor action, pray to the gods.
